The Columbus Museum Internship

Hello, everyone! I have been in Columbus, Georgia working at The Columbus Museum for my summer internship for the past week. I have been working in the education department, specifically creating an activity books for kids grades kindergarten through second grade. It’s definitely been a crazy curve – after all, it has been a long time since I’ve been in that grade mindset. There’s such a big difference between the information a little kid can process and what a college student or even a high school student can!

This past week, I have looked at various pieces throughout the museum. Picking and choosing pieces and subjects that little kids will enjoy is difficult. Even more complicated is writing content that they will be able to understand. They can’t be overloaded with technical terms; it is all about simplicity. So, I’ve chosen things such as statues, landscapes, and decorative arts that I can tie activities to. Activities such as drawing, a word search, and even a Mad Lib have been fun to make for this activity booklet!

I’ve finished the text, though it will likely need some more fine tuning before it can be considered ready (by myself or my boss). Additionally, I finished the first round of paper prototypes of the page layouts! I’m so excited to be applying things that I learned in my classes, such as the types of prototyping, to my internship. After the prototypes are tweaked and approved, I will be taking them to the graphic designer. From there, I will get to explain to him how I want the page to be. He will make the first draft, which will then be reviewed by myself and my boss before sending it back. When everything is perfect, the final product will be sent to printing!

This has been so much fun so far. Hopefully I will be able to go through the second round of my internship very soon. In addition to the education department, I should be working with the marketing/development department as well. There is also a chance I could sit down with a grant writer! So many possibilities (more than I ever expected) can be found in this one building, and I can’t wait to see what’s next in the remaining two weeks of my internship.
